Rockstar hasn't confirmed when a GTA 6 online mode will launch. Store listings describe Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience at launch on November 19, 2026, and Rockstar hasn't announced pricing, a release window or how a new online mode would work. Here's what's known, what's likely based on Rockstar's history, and what it means for GTA Online on GTA 5.
Key Takeaways
- GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience on November 19, 2026.
- Rockstar hasn't announced a GTA 6 online mode, its timing or its price.
- GTA Online on GTA 5 launched two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013.
- Red Dead Online launched as a beta about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Neither edition of GTA 6 advertises online content.
Does GTA 6 Have Online Multiplayer?
Not confirmed. Rockstar's preorder listings and coverage of them describe GTA 6 as a single-player game at launch, with no confirmation of an online mode on November 19. That doesn't mean there won't be one. It means Rockstar hasn't said anything official about it yet.
What Rockstar's History Suggests
| Game | Game launch | Online launch |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 | September 17, 2013 | GTA Online on October 1, 2013 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | Red Dead Online beta in late November 2018 |
In both cases, Rockstar launched the single-player game first and the online mode a few weeks later. A similar approach for GTA 6 would make sense, but it's a pattern, not a confirmation.
What Happens to GTA Online on GTA 5?
Rockstar hasn't announced an end date for GTA Online on GTA 5. It remains available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Rockstar also hasn't said whether progress, money or cars will carry over to a future GTA 6 online mode, so be sceptical of anyone promising a transfer.
Will You Need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass?
For the single-player game, no. Online multiplayer on consoles usually requires PlayStation Plus or an Xbox online subscription, so if a GTA 6 online mode arrives, expect that requirement to apply. Rockstar's own GTA+ membership, which the Rockstar store lists as a complimentary month with both GTA 6 editions, is a separate service.
